September Update: RBG, Uber Eats, KFC, &amp; Instagram Heroes

[[p]]September just happened to be a fantastic month for DMI membership as we reached the amazing total&nbsp;of 100,000 members and also received a recognition of [[a href="https://digitalmarketinginstitute.com/blog/digital-marketing-institute-wins-at-membership-excellence-awards" target="_blank"]]Membership Organization of the Year 2020[[/a]], by UK-based MemCom Excellence Awards. We&#39;re thrilled by the support and encouragement![[/p]]

[[p]]Still, the world moves on and the news cycle continues to swirl&nbsp;around the two Ps - Pandemic and Politics&nbsp;- and the many intersections between the two which affect the digital marketing world: one&nbsp;such being Google&rsquo;s plan to [[a href="https://mashable.com/article/google-election-ads-ban-november-3/?europe=true" target="_blank"]]block political ads right[[/a]] after the US Presidential election polls close. But we&rsquo;re here to bring you some other stories of interest from around the universe.[[/p]]

[[p]]One of the biggest news stories this month was the death of US Supreme Court associate justice, and feminist icon, [[a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2013/03/07/us/ruth-bader-ginsburg-fast-facts/index.html" target="_blank"]]Ruth Bader Ginsburg[[/a]]. An arresting tribute to her was this image of her characteristic lace collar placed on the famous &lsquo;Fearless Girl&rsquo; statue located near Wall Street. The image appeared in a full-page ad in The New York Times placed by State Street Global Advisors (who originally commissioned the statue). [[p]]When fast-food giant KFC had to halt their latest campaign just before its launch, they came up with a novel approach. Taking a poke at themselves and their own long-held branding, they managed to create a campaign that can be released in every market. No matter what stage of the pandemic a country is in, hygiene is an issue, and KFC is playing on that. Their age-old slogan, &ldquo;it&rsquo;s finger-licken&rsquo; good&rdquo;, is visibly blurred out in the campaign images. In the words of creative director at KFC&rsquo;s agency, Mother, Hermeti Balarin:&nbsp;"[[em]]There&#39;s this sense of unity around the globe right now. It&#39;s the first time ever for at least two generations we&#39;ve had everyone feeling the same about something. As horrible as the pandemic is, it has created a unique insight or context for everyone to actually riff off[[/em]]." [[p]]Instagram will be [[a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2020/sep/20/instagram-at-10-how-sharing-photos-has-entertained-us-upset-us-and-changed-our-sense-of-self" target="_blank"]]10 years old[[/a]] on October 6 - wonderful timing to also celebrate the most exciting event on the platform this year. [[a href="https://www.instagram.com/davidattenborough/" target="_blank"]]David Attenborough[[/a]], the 94-year old English naturalist, launched his Instagram account on September 24th saying &ldquo;The world is in trouble&rdquo;. People paid attention very quickly: in fact he actually broke a world record&nbsp;when he managed to rack up [[a href="https://www.npr.org/2020/09/25/916891692/sir-david-attenborough-reaches-1m-instagram-followers-in-hours-breaking-world-re" target="_blank"]]one million followers[[/a]] in just over 4 hours, beating the record previously held by Jennifer Aniston (by 30 minutes!). At&nbsp;time of writing, at 4.7 million followers, he still has a way to go to catch up with [[a href="https://www.instagram.com/gretathunberg/" target="_blank"]]Greta Thunberg[[/a]] (10.5 million), but we&rsquo;ll give him a week or two!&nbsp;&nbsp;[[/p]]

[[p]]There is much discussion about the new normal of working from home and how [[a href="https://www.theguardian.com/business/2020/sep/20/wfh-not-office-working-from-home-2020-radical-change-effects-lockdown" target="_blank"]]2020 has changed it forever[[/a]]. The increased interest in home decor and improvements is apparently typical of any pandemic as explained [[a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/blakemorgan/2020/09/28/4-ways-covid-has-changed-home-design/#5f9e45d66843" target="_blank"]]in this Forbes article[[/a]]. In Ireland, at least, there is a discernible interest in [[a href="https://www.irishtimes.com/news/social-affairs/more-than-30-people-queue-overnight-to-secure-property-in-carlow-1.4365816" target="_blank"]]people taking the opportunity to mov[[/a]][[a href="http://www.irishtimes.com/news/social-affairs/more-than-30-people-queue-overnight-to-secure-property-in-carlow-1.4365816" target="_blank"]]e[[/a]]&nbsp;from urban to rural areas. Companies like Google are still considering [[a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2020/09/23/google-ceo-sundar-pichai-considering-hybrid-work-from-home-models.html" target="_blank"]]models of home/office hybrids[[/a]] while we should all perhaps be aware of how some employers might be keeping an eye [[a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/sep/27/shirking-from-home-staff-feel-the-heat-as-bosses-ramp-up-remote-surveillance" target="_blank"]]on their employees[[/a]] at home. And there was&nbsp;[[a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/24/opinion/jerry-seinfeld-new-york-coronavirus.html" target="_blank"]]Jerry Seinfeld&rsquo;s piece[[/a]] on how New York is still the greatest city in the world in which to work from home.[[/p]]

[[p]]And here&#39;s a fascinating fact: [[strong]]Uber Eats[[/strong]] is now more successful than Uber&rsquo;s ride-hailing service - as people have stayed home. At the end of August, Uber Eats launched an in-app [[a href="https://www.mobilemarketer.com/news/uber-eats-unveils-first-ad-format-with-sponsored-restaurant-listings/584394/" target="_blank"]]CPC-based ad platform[[/a]] for restaurants. And their most recent spot is a [[a href="https://edition.cnn.com/videos/business/2020/09/22/uber-eats-hamill-stewart-star-wars-trek-piccard-skywalker-orig.cnn-business/video/playlists/stories-worth-watching/" target="_blank"]]splashy commercial [[/a]]where two inter-galactic heroes face off in a&hellip; umm... duel over their choice of takeout. Luke Skywalker and Captain Picard? That&#39;s the level at which the restaurant and food business [[a href="http://my.digitalmarketinginstitute.com/library/entry/the-disruption-of-the-restaurant-industry-has-only-begun-e1c-a2r" target="_blank"]]has&nbsp;changed during 2020[[/a]].[[/p]]

	[[li]]Lego have said they will start to [[a href="https://www.theguardian.com/business/2020/sep/15/lego--paper-bags-packaging-sustainability" target="_blank"]]phase out plastic bags[[/a]] in their packaging and use sustainably-sourced paper bags instead.
